The 'Conversations' series began a decade ago on November 21, 2006 when I made an experimental recording using my cell phone and a contact microphone. The recording begins with a steady audio interference buzz from the phone being too close to the computer and amplifier. Calling random telephone numbers from the Greater Johnstown Phone Book, I started the process of building conversation and response by calling and recording these random people at chance. The initial confused answerer is recorded and then used to playback in a new call to another randomized receiver. That person's response is then taped and played back for another confused recipient, over and over...
